Metanoia

 In Buddhism, we do not actually use the word "reincarnation." We say "rebirth." But even rebirth is problematic. According to the teachings of the Buddha, "birth" does not exist either. Birth generally means from nothing you become something, and death generally means from something to nothing. But if we observe the thing around us, we find that nothing comes from nothing. Before its so-called birth, this flower already existed in other forms - clouds, sunshine, seeds, soil, and many other elements. Rather than birth and rebirth, it is more accurate to say "manifestation" and "remanifestation." The so-called birthday of the flower is really a day of its remanitestation. It has already been here in other forms, and now it has made an effort to remanifest. Manifestation means its constituents have always been here in some form, and now since conditions are sufficient, it is capable of manifesting itself as a flower. When things have manifested, we commonly say that they are born, but in fact, they are not. When conditions are no longer sufficient and the flower ceases to manifest, we way the flower has died, but that is not correct either. Its constituents have merely transformed themselves into other elements, like compost and soil. We have to transcend notions like birth, death, being, and non-being. Reality is free from all notions.

이와 비슷한 내용이 틱낫한 스님의 <죽음도 없이 두려움도 없이>에 아주 자세히 잘 설명되어 있다. 나에게 이 책은 정말 큰 깨달음을 준 책이라고 할 수 있다. 죽음에 대한 개념이 확실하게 잡혔기 때문이다. 왜 불교에서 '태어남도 없고 죽음도 없다' 고 하는지 알 수 있었다. 그리고 이 책을 읽은지 얼마 안되어 친할아버지가 돌아가셨다. 그 때 난 틱낫한 스님의 말씀이 더욱 와닿았다. 할아버지의 육신은 더 이상 볼 수 없지만, 할아버지는 다른 형태로 내 곁에 머물러 계시다. 지금 이 글을 쓰는 순간에도. 그래서 나는 할아버지께서 돌아가셨다고 슬퍼하지 않았다. 슬퍼할 이유가 있다면 이제 할아버지와 예전처럼 인간 대 인간으로 만나 이야기하지 못한다는 것이 슬플 뿐이다. 그러나 나는 강력하게 믿는다. 할아버지는 4월의 봄바람에도, 길가에 피어 있는 한 송이 꽃에도 계시다는 걸. 그래서 난 할아버지를 잃었다고 생각하지 않는다. 그리고 이런 생각은 더 확장되어 이런 생각도 들게 했다. 아무리 노력해도 변할 것 같지 않은 이세상, 그래서 더 나은 세상을 만들려 아둥바둥 해봤자 소용없다는 비관이 더 나은 세상을 위해 싸우다 죽어간 수많은 사람들의 노력과 희생은 세상 어딘가에 다른 형태로 살아 숨쉬고 있다는 희망으로 바뀐 것이다. 그리하여 절망적인 세상에서 희망의 맥을 찾을 수 있었고 나 또한 그 희망에 동참하리라는 결심도 해보았다.
